Description: | Culbin sand-hills. Morayshire. Successive storm beaches situated on a raised beach are swept clear by the wind in advance of the drifting dunes leaving a pattern of low parallel ridges seen in the centre of the photograph. The direction of sand-drift is almost towards observer, i.e. from west to east. Note the dome-shaped dune in the distance. The photograph was taken from another similar dune in the foreground. A raised beach is an ancient beach occurring above the present shoreline. In the Culbin area shingle ridges extend up to 11 m. above present sea level indicating the sea level was 5.5 m. O.D. when they formed. This has been dated to 6500 BP and is known as the Post Glacial High Sea Level. |
