| Description: | Barnfield Pit, Swanscombe. Looking NW. Tusk of Elephas antiquus, in the 100' terrace gravel of the Thames. Tusk and teeth of elephant and rhinoceros occur commonly in the gravel of this pit, but are confined to the lowest part of it. The specimen seen in the photograph measured 6 ft.6 in., from tip to the broad end, but as it was broken this represents only part of its original length. It was friable and fell to pieces when an attempt was made to extract it. |
