Caption: Barnfield Pit, Swanscombe.
Description: Barnfield Pit, Swanscombe. Thinning of Thanet Sand, overlap of gravel on to Chalk and occurrence of piping in Chalk beyond the cover of Thanet Sand, also valley cut through the 100' terrace. This photograph is nearly conterminous with No. A1412. It shows the gravel overlapping the Thanet Sand and resting directly upon the Chalk (Cor-anguinum Zone). Pipes and hollows full of gravel are seen where the Chalk is not overlain by Thanet Sand, but are not seen in the Chalk underlying that formation pointing to the protective influence of the Thanet Sand in preventing solvent waters from affecting the Chalk.
