Description: Barnfield Pit, Swanscombe. Stratification of the 100' terrace gravels of the Thames. These gravels contain palaeolitic implements. The earlier types are found in the lower beds, the more advanced forms occuring in the higher beds. The photograph shows the thinning of the Thanet Sand (2) towards the north (right). Bed 3. The lower gravel contains only coarsely worked flakes of Strepy type. Bed 4. No implements but fresh-water mollucsa. Bed 5. The middle gravel divisible into two parts, a lower and an upper characterized respectively by implements of early and late Challes type.
