Description: | Sims and Sons Brickyard, Claygate. Claygate Beds. This photograph shows a section of the top beds in the Claygate Beds. Here sand preponderates and clay occurs only as narrow seams of pipeclay which has a shaly structure and breaks readily into horizontal flakes. Two prominent bands of ferruginous sand, formerly dug for extraction of iron, are seen, one above the hammer and the other forming a cornice half-way up the face of the pit. See Proc. Geol. Assoc. Vol.XXIII. pp.237-242, 1912. |
