Description: | Railway Junction, near Hopton Works. Looking W. of N. In the foreground a broad shallow semicircular hollow, partly drift-filled, in the Carboniferous Limestone. In this hollow the drainage from the melting ice is accumulated, and thence cut a rapidly deepening narrow V-shaped gorge, the top end of which, lined with trees, is seen in the photograph; the gorge descends sharply northwards into Via Gellia Valley at Rider Point. The Hopton Wood Limestone Quarries, with an artificial gap in the profile of the hills, are seen on the right. The outcrop of the lower toadstone forms the slighter slope at the top of the quarries, and the same toadstone much attenuated, crops out at the foot of the tree-covered ridge on the left. The limestone slope beyond the Via Gellia Valley is seen in the distance, and beyond it on the skyline the anticlinal ridge of Blakelow Hill. |
