| Description: | Strontian Lead Mines. Argyllshire. Clashgorm Winze and shaft just beyond road. Bellsgrove workings beyond, in middle distance. The primary ores were galena, zinc-blende (sphalerite) jamesonite and iron pyrites. Moine schists on skyline; Sgurr a' Bhuic (right), Sgurr na' h-Ighinn (left), Sgurr Dhomhnuill (extreme left). Granite (tonalite) forms relatively low ground to right (south) of road. View looking eastwards along the main vein from Middleshop Mines. During the 19th century, the mines were worked occasionally closing finally in 1872. A proposal was made to reopen them in 1901 and work was started at the Bellsgrove Engine Shaft, work petering out in 1904 due to lack of capital. Since then the mines have remained idle. |
