Description: | Moss-litter Works, Dunmore Moss, 8.9 km. east-south-east of Stirling. Cut peat lying to dry at sides of 'banks' in the foreground. Stacks of dried peat in distance ready for transport to teasing mill. Firstly, 5 ft. of brown peat, mostly sphagnum is cut. The next 3 ft. are then stripped by going over the first cutting, of this 2 ft. are black with some heather roots. The rest of the peat, which is also black and varies from 6 to 30 inches in thickness, is left in, the original heather turf is thrown back on top of it. Peat is later stacked, compressed by steam compressor at the railway junction, and delivered there into trucks. The average size of a cut slice is 7x16x15 inches nearly 1,000 to the ton of brown peat and 1,100-1,200 to the ton of black peat. |
