| Description: | Stankards Bing. West Lothian. Spent oil-shale bing, showing method of working of material; bulldozer extracting and pushing down shale. Digger for loading lorries. Two lorries fully loaded. These imposing 30-40 m. flat-topped artifical hills of spent oil-shale are now being worked to provide a low cost aggregate capable of good compaction. It is used as a base for road, motorways, industrial sites and housing estates. It has also been used for low energy brick-making. |
