Description: | Pitscurry (Pitcaple) Quarry, west face, 1 km. east-north-east of Whiteford. Aberdeenshire. The rock quarried is norite, a type of gabbro. It is used as a hard-rock aggregate for road building or as a general purpose concreting aggregate. Pitscurry Quarry - west face. Gabbros of Insch Basic Mass (dark) intruded by 10 m. thick sill of tourmaline and beryl-bearing pegmatite (pale pink). Pegmatite body has both subhorizontal and vertical offshoots. Pegmatite is cut and displaced by shear zone dipping gently to right (centre of photo). Part of a panorama with D04332 and D04333. |
