Description: Pitscurry (Pitcaple) Quarry, west face, 1 km. east-north-east of Whiteford. Aberdeenshire. The rock quarried is norite, a type of gabbro. It is used as a hard-rock aggregate for road building or as a general purpose concreting aggregate. Gabbros of Insch Basic Mass (dark) intruded by 10 m. thick sill of tourmaline and beryl-bearing pegmatite (pale pink). Pegmatite body has both subhorizontal and vertical offshoots. Pegmatite is cut and displaced by shear zone dipping gently to right (extreme right of photo). A derelict crane is seen in the centre. Part of a panorama with D04332 and D04334. A sill is a sheet-like body of intrusive igneous rock. Pegmatites are very coarse-grained igneous rocks, the ultra-coarse grain is caused by slow crystallization from a volatile rich melt.
