Description: | Pitscurry (Pitcaple) Quarry, west face, 1 km. east-north-east of Whiteford. Aberdeenshire. The rock quarried is norite, a type of gabbro. It is used as a hard-rock aggregate for road building or as a general purpose concreting aggregate. Gabbros of Insch Basic Mass (dark) intruded by 10 m. thick sill of tourmaline and beryl-bearing pegmatite (pale pink). Pegmatite body has both horizontal and vertical offshoots. Part of a panorama with D04333 and D04334. Gabbro is a coarse-grained basic igneous rock composed of the minerals labradorite, plagioclase and orthopyroxene. |
