| Description: | Scottish oil-shale processing 6. Oil from the ammonia cooler is forced through pipes into a series of filter presses where the solid paraffin is removed from the liquid oil. A typical press contains 50-80 plates set vertically in a cast-iron framework. Beneath is a shallow metal trough and a spiral conveyor so that when the press is emptied the paraffin is conveyed to the next stage, the hydraulic press. Throughput is 42,000 gallons of heavy oil and paraffin through 1,403 filter plates per day. The oil run-off is termed Blue oil and undergoes further distillation into several final products including lubricating oil. |
