The base of the Millstone Grit, which is a fine-grained quartzite is shown resting on the uppermost beds of the Carboniferous Limestone (Upper Dibunophyllym Zone); the junction is exceedingly sharp. The handle of the hammer rests on the soft bed of limestone.
