| Description: | Scottish oil-shale processing 5. Ammonia coolers for the refrigeration of oil used for the extraction of solid paraffin. A single cooler is a cast iron casing 20 feet long and 20.5 inches in diameter placed horizontally, containing within a steel tube 15 inches in diameter. The annular space between the two is for the circulation of liquid ammonia from a compressor. In the centre of the inner tube a 4 inch diameter shaft with attached scrapers removes the frozen oil from the cooler. The coolers are typically arranged in banks of four and are capable of cooling 11,000 gallons from 70 degrees F. to 32 degrees F. in 24 hours. The next stage is the filter press. |
