| Description: | Washers are vertical cylindrical steel tanks with a conical bottom and about 27 feet in diameter and 11.5 feet high with 4.4 inches brick for insulation. They have a 6 inch inlet pipe, a 12 inch outlet pipe and a 3 inch outlet pipe at the very bottom for removal of tar. The soda washer below is only 10 feet 3 inches high. The two sets of washers were capable of dealing with 74,000 gallons of oil daily. After washing the oil underwent a second distillation. The distillate undergoes chemical treatment to remove impurities. The oil is first stirred either mechanically or by compressed air in a 'washer' firstly with added sulphuric acid and then in a second washer beneath the first with added caustic soda. Both remove different impurities. |
