Description: Scottish oil-shale processing 3. Bench of crude oil coking stills used in the second main process, the refining of the crude oil into a series of oil and wax products Coking or 'pot' stills are one of two types of still used in Scottish oil-shale refining, the other type being the 'boiler' still. Both types are usually used in combination. The process takes advantage of the different boiling point of the various oils. Distillation is carried out by condensing out the oils into different receiving vessels. The refining process is concerned with: 1. the separation of the mixtures of hydrocarbons from the crude by distillation, 2. the removal from the oil of impurities by washing oils with chemicals, heating or filtration and 3. separation of crude solid wax from the liquid oils in which it is dissolved.
