| Description: | Scottish oil-shale processing 2. Benches of oil-shale retorts which are used to draw out the crude oil and other vapours from the raw material - the oil-shale. The retorts about 29 feet high and about 3 feet in diameter at the bottom are arranged in sets of four within firebrick heating chambers. Each pair of retorts have a hopper for the supply of raw material while at the bottom, the bench is carried on brickwork piers which enable spent shale to be discharged into trucks. The Scottish shale-oil manufacturing process consisted of basically two processes; the production of crude oil and sulphate of ammonia by heating up to 1800 degrees F. in a retort; and refining the crude oil into a series of oil and wax products as required by market conditions. |
