Description: | Scottish oil-shale processing 1. An oil-shale breaker as used in one of the early stages in the processing of oil shale to produce various oils and waxes. From the minehead, shale is conveyed in trucks by an endless wire rope to the 'breaker' where it is broken into pieces about four inches cube by passing it between revolving heavy cast-iron rollers fitted with wedge-shaped blunt teeth made of specially tempered hard steel. The oil-shales of the Lothians consist of indurated clay and contain varing quantities of organic matter called kerogen and pyrobitumen. At certain temperatures during processing they decompose and distillate to produce crude oil. |
