Description: Hailes Quarry, Slateford. Edinburgh. Quarry in Hailes Sandstone overlain by shales (Calciferous Sandstone Series). A general view of the quarry looking north. A tramway crosses the quarry while in the middle distance several cranes and a steam pumping house can be seen. The Calciferous Sandstone Series is Lower Carboniferous in age. Craigleith Quarry was said to have been in operation for over 300 years in 1892. It is now totally filled in.
