| Description: | Hessilhead Quarry (Lugton Lime Works) 3.2 km. east of Beith. Ayrshire. General view of working face, showing about 7.6 - 9.2 m. of the Dockra Limestone. A loaded truck can be seen on the light railway on the quarry floor. The beds dip at a low angle. The limestone is pale grey in colour, has occasional bands of darker stone, and is of excellent quality. It was used for agricultural purposes in the raw ground state and for stone-dusting in mines, as well as for poultry grit and road chips. The Dockra Limestone is one of the four principal Carboniferous limestones of economic importance in North Ayrshire. It can be up to 60 ft. thick, though the hard, compact, workable rock varies between 12 and 40 ft. |
