| Description: | Esperston Lime Works, Esperston. Midlothian. General view of working face, showing about 25 ft. of North Greens Limestone with 6-8 ft. of drift overburden. The lower 10 ft. of the North Greens Limestone are clean and massive, but towards the top the courses are thinner, with some shale partings and occasional nodules of chert. Chemical analysis shows the main band of limestone is 93.24% calcium carbonate. Note the narrow-gauge railway track running along the foot of the quarry wall. Limestone was originally burnt to create lime but crushing later became important. The rocks are of the Lower Limestone Group of the Carboniferous period. The quarry is now disused. |
