Description: No. 4 Pit, Milton Street, Swanscombe. Looking SW. View in chalk-pit showing method of working away the chalk. A tunnel into which trucks may be drawn, is first excavated, and a vertical pipe in communication with this is then cut through the chalk above. By this means the chalk, as it is worked away from the top, passes through the pipe into a truck situated below.
