| Description: | Silver Grey Quarry, Creetown. Kirkcudbrightshire. General view of the quarry face and floor showing method of working by means of crane and 'blondin'. The rock quarried is granite. A vertically-mounted steam boiler powers a crane for working on the quarry floor. To lift the granite blocks out of the quarry a 'blondin' is used. This is a pulley system of wire ropes which stretch across the quarry. Large blocks of granite await lifting from the quarry floor. Quarrying began at Creetown in c.1831 by the Liverpool Dock Trustees. |
