| Description: | Glebe and Kirkmabreck Quarry, Creetown. Kirkcudbrightshire. The 'sett-making' yard. Each worker had his own open hut to keep out of the worst of the weather. Granite blocks were partly worked on the quarry floor before being transferred to the sett-makers who finished them working on sand-filled barrels. The waste, seen in a heap to the right had various uses, pinning stones in walls, construction of paths and horonising. A 'sett' is stone roughly squared for paving. Light railway tracks can be seen, these ran through the quarry to a storage area and a pier on the shore. |
