Description: | Glebe and Kirkmabreck Quarry, Creetown. Kirkcudbrightshire. General view of the granite quarry. The quarry was worked in the 1930's by the Scottish Granite Co. Ltd. General view. The stone is taken off the 'cross-reed' joints by mining with gunpowder, and is handled by means of cranes several of which are in view. The quarry floor has a network of narrow-gauge railway track. By the cranes there are several bogies full of granite blocks. Quarrying was initiated by the Liverpool Dock Trustees in about 1831. |
