Description: Locharbriggs Quarry. Dumfriesshire. Looking along the working platform. In the near foreground is a block of stone ready to be raised to the surface by one of the series of electric powered cranes that can be seen extending along the top of the quarry face. A LMS (London Midland Scottish) wagon used for stone transportation can just be seen. The Locharbriggs Sandstone Formation is a Permian red sandstone deposited in a desert environment. The red colour is caused by a coating of iron oxide on the individual sand grains.
