Description: | Hailes Quarry, Slateford, Edinburgh. Midlothian. Blaes being worked for brick-making, overlying the Hailes Sandstone (Calciferous Sandstone Series). The photograph is taken looking south towards Kingsknowe Farm and shows the strata dipping into the face which has a thick overburden of glacial sand and gravel. Note the continuous wire cable tramway with a truck on an incline. Blaes is a Scottish term for a mudstone or shale that weathers to a crumbling mass and eventually a soft clay. The Calciferous Sandstone Series are of Lower Carboniferous age. |
