Description: This site overlies the outcrop (subcrop below thin superficial deposits) of the Great Seam Coal, within the Carboniferous limestone Coal Formation (Clackmannan Group). Possible old, shallow coal mining workings and the proximity of a drain may have formed a cavity below the surface causing a collapse. Plastic geotextilematting is visible beneath the tarmac showing that an attemptat ground stabilisation had occurred previously. The hole is approximately 4 metres in diameter, visible becoming 6-8 metres widebeneath the tarmac layer. The hole is approximately 2.5 metres deep. From the safety cordon the succession seemed to be: tarmac, made ground (gravel) 30 centimetres, plastic matting then either a thick glacial diamicton or stoney clay infilling. No obvious bedrock was seen. First record of this ground collapse was in October 2004 (Site Manager). The Great Seam Coal was formerly visible at outcrop in the adjacent shallow railway cutting just to the east of the store.
