Description: Creetown Quarry, Creetown. Wigtownshire. Granite quarry showing jointing. The granite is a Lower Old Red Sandstone intrusion. The conspicuous steeply-dipping, north-north-west, 'cross-reed' joints with the less well-developed near vertical, east-north-east 'hem joints' are clearly seen. Several sett makers' huts and cranes occur on the quarry floor surrounded by stockpiles of finished setts. The granite is usually blasted off the 'cross-reed' joints by means of powder.
