| Description: | Hillhouse Quarry, Dundonald. Ayrshire. Teschenitic dolerite sill with veins. A close-up of the quarry face clearly showing the well-developed columnar jointing. At the base of the quarry face a 'Ruston' crane mounted on the light railway can be seen along with several trucks. Note the two trucks at the top of the quarry face. The columnar jointing is caused when the teschenitic dolerite lava is intruded into the country rock and cools down. Contraction causes a pattern of tensional forces acting towards a number of centres, the forces pull open a series of joints which ideally form in a hexagonal pattern. |
