Description: Hillhouse Quarry, Dundonald. Ayrshire. Columnar teschenitic dolerite being quarried for road-metal. Quarry face and crushing plant. The face exhibits one of the best examples of regular columnar jointing in Britain. Note the large stockpile of crushed rock. The dolerite is a basic medium-grained igneous rock forming a sheet-like igneous body called a 'sill'. The sill was intruded into the country rock conformable with the bedding.
