Description: An t-Aird, Iona. Argyllshire. Quarry in marble of an Archaean (Precambrian) complex. The rock is an ophicalcite, a serpentine-rich green coloured marble famous for ornamental purposes. The marble occurs in lens-shaped bodies of rock called lenticles in the Lewisian gneiss. The photograph shows a hand-winched crane made by D. Watson & Co., Govan. Note that some blocks are numbered. A marble is a metamorphosed limestone i.e. a limestone that has undergone recrystallization due to heat, pressure or both. Iona marble has been worked over many centuries.
