| Description: | Huntershill Quarry, Bishopbriggs, Glasgow. Lanarkshire. Mines in the Bishopbriggs Sandstone. Originally quarried but then mined by stoop and room (pillar and stall) as the overburden of poor quality rock and glacial till increased. The rock is thickly-bedded and capable of providing large blocks up to 12 ft. by 6 ft. Note the size of the galleries using the figure for scale. Some were up to 15 m. high. Bishopbriggs Sandstone is from the Upper Limestone Formation of Lower Carboniferous age. Mining ceased in 1907 when a roof fall killed 5 men. |
