Description: Label name: Eastman's, White. Alternative name: White Rutland. Specimen description: Uniform white. Text from: Watson, J. British and foreign marbles and other ornamental stones. Cambridge : University Press, 1916. 655 WHITE RUTLAND. Eastman Quarries, West Rutland, Vermont. The beds of Eolian Marble extend into Rutland, where the most important group of marble quarries in the State of Vermont is situated. The quarries lie along the western base of a low range of hills in the neighbourhood of West Rutland. They yield marbles of various shades of colour, light tints dominating.
This specimen is an example of the white variety. It skews that this rock is less lustrous than the White Statuary Marbles of Italy or Greece, although some marble workers in America assert that it compares favourably with any European Statuary Marble. The Taylor Mausoleum, Woodlawn Cemetery, New York, is composed of White Rutland. It may also be seen in the New York State Capitol, Albany, N.Y.
