Description: Label name: Rosewood, Ashford, Derbyshire. Alternative name: Rosewood. Specimen description: Dark brown-black laminated. Text from: Watson, J. British and foreign marbles and other ornamental stones. Cambridge : University Press, 1916. 5 ROSEWOOD, Ashford Dale Quarries, Bakewell, Derbyshire. This specimen represents a marble which, owing to its beauty and rarity, is highly esteemed by workers of marble. It was discovered in the year 1831 on the estate of the Duke of Devonshire, near Ashford. It is a dark brown laminated limestone with parallel reddish veins, and very similar in appearance, when polished, to rosewood, hence the name by which it is known. There are indications visible in the specimen which suggest a coral origin. It is very hard, takes a good polish, and when formed into articles of. the same kind as those made of wood, it is so like the latter substance as to deceive the eye of the observer who may examine the marble ornaments for the first time. It has sometimes been used for constructing mantelpieces, but it is chiefly employed for making carved and turned ornaments and inlaid work. The largest block that has as yet been procured, is in the possession of the Duke of Devonshire, who has had it made into a pillar for supporting a figure. The column is six feet high and about fifteen inches m diameter, and stands in the library at Chatsworth.
