Description: Label name: Breccia Medecia. Alternative name: Breccia Violetto. Specimen description: White-pink-purple fragments with dark purple veins. Assuming M189 is from Italy. Text from: Watson, J. British and foreign marbles and other ornamental stones. Cambridge : University Press, 1916. 358 BRECCIA VIOLETTO. Strazzema Quarries, Seravezza, Tuscany. Presented by The Art Pavement and Decoration, Ltd., London. This marble is sometimes known as Breccia di Seravezza. As the specimen skews, it is a brecciated rock, composed of white and occasional red or brownish purple fragments. The veins which constitute the cementing material vary considerably in colour in the different beds, as does also the size of the white fragments. In the specimen these develop a slight purple tinge.
Some varieties of this marble are stated to be unsuitable for positions that are exposed to the sun, as the bright colours of the ground-mass are liable to fade.
Examples of this marble may be seen in the War Office, London (1906), the columns in the main entrance being composed of it. It can also be seen in the internal decoration of the Russell Hotel, London (1900),. and of the Drapers' Hall (1898). Breccia Viorletto was employed in forming the Opus Alexandrinum pavement in the chancel of Bristol Cathedral (1895), and it was used for the same purpose in the chancels of the Cathedrals of Truro (1886) and Peterborough (1892). Instances of its use may be seen in Paris, where it was employed for adorning the interior of the New Opera House in 1875. It was also used for decorating the staircases of the New Municipal Buildings of Glasgow in 1889. The mantelpiece in the Common Room of the New Lecture Rooms of the University of Cambridge, which were completed in 1911, is partly composed of it.
