Caption: Marble specimen. Plymouth Black. Radford Quarries, Plymstock, Devonshire.
Description: Label name: Plymouth Black. Specimen description: Deep black with distinct white veins. Text from: Watson, J. British and foreign marbles and other ornamental stones. Cambridge : University Press, 1916. 31 PLYMOUTH BLACK. Radford Quarries, Plymstock, Devonshire. This specimen represents a marble which is almost identical with that last described, except that the groundmass is darker, in fact it is a deep black, hence the name by which it is known to marble workers. It is from the same quarries as the foregoing specimen. The few white veins and small patches are in striking contrast with the black matrix. Examples of this marble may be seen forming the new pavement of the interior of the Chapel of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge (1912). The dark columns of the pulpit in St Paul's Cathedral, London, are made of it (1861).
