Description: | Label name: White Pentelicon. Alternative name: White Pentelic (Stamatovouni). Specimen description: White with occasional yellow-grey veins-patches. Text from: Watson, J. British and foreign marbles and other ornamental stones. Cambridge : University Press, 1916. 302 WHITE PENTELIC (Stamatovouni). Mount Pentelikon, Attica. On the lower slopes of Mount Pentelikon, nearer the base than where the other deposits of white marble are found, and on both sides of the mountain, there is a valuable deposit of white marble, which was worked in classical times, and which has quite lately been redeveloped. The marble is now known commercially as Stamatovouni. The quarries are about eight miles north of Athens. It is a white crystalline rock, fairly fine in texture, and has faint grey veins traversing the mass. This variety is said to be slightly harder than the White Pentelic Marbles previously described. It can be procured in sound blocks of almost any dimensions, and is used in this country as well as on the Continent for sculpturing and other decorative purposes. This marble was chosen for the restoration of the Stadium at Athens, which was commenced in 1896. |
