Cambridge : University Press, 1916. 92 GALWAY BLACK. Merlin Park Quarries, Co. Galway. This is another variety of the Black Marbles of Galway. The specimen skews that the colour of this rock is not so deep and pure as that from the Doughiska Quarries. Occasional white specks appear in the mass. which are evidently of organic origin. The quarries are situated about four miles from the town of Galway. This marble was used for the geometrical patterned. floor and wall panelling of the Dublin Corporation Technical Schools (1900). The steps of the portico of St Paul's Cathedral, London, and the staircase of Marlborough House (c. 1709) are composed of it. It was also used by Sir Christopher Wren in 1700 for the staircases of Kensington Palace |
