This is a compact rock, belonging to the Carboniferous Limestone series. It takes a high polish. The colour varies from a dark grey to a medium brown, interspersed with grey crinoidal fragments, the sections of which sometimes resemble a bird's eye, hence the name. There are also a few shells present. Locally it is popular as a decorative stone, and numerous instances of its use may also be seen in London. The bases and capitals of the columns in the entrance hall of the New Sessions House (1907) are composed of it. The slab supporting Prince Arthur's tomb in Worcester Cathedral is another example. The floor of the Lady Chapel in Worcester Cathedral is composed of Derbyshire Bird's Eye, together with Sicilian Marble laid in a geometrical pattern. |
