Description: Label name: Mona, Rhoscolym, Anglesey. Alternative name: Anglesey Serpentine. Specimen description: Breciated dark green-black with small white patches. Locally known as Mona Marble. Text from: Watson, J. British and foreign marbles and other ornamental stones. Cambridge : University Press, 1916. 779 ANGLESEY SERPENTINE. Rhoscolyn Quarries, Holyhead Island In the Island of Anglesey, Serpentine exists, and has been quarried and used for ornamental purposes for a great number of years. It is sometimes known locally as Mona Marble. On the Geological Survey Map it is delineated as forming an elongated lozenge-shaped patch about a mile and three-quarters in length from E. to W., extending inland north of Rhoscolyn from the west shore of Holyhead Island, and occurring in several smaller patches on or near the opposite coast of Anglesey. The most important mass of serpentine is found near Rhoscolyn, where there is a quarry from which the specimen was probably obtained. It is a dark green brecciated rock with a few patches of calcite, the presence of which Professor Bonney attributes to infiltration from overlying masses of Carboniferous Limestone which have been subsequently removed by denudation.
The demand for this ornamental stone has greatly diminished recently, and the quarries are now seldom in operation. It is, however, sometimes used for internal panelling and for ornamental paving in catherdrals and other ecclesiastical buildings. It may be seen in the Opus Alexandrinum pavement in the Presbytery of Bristol Cathedral (1895), and in the chancels of Truro Cathedral (1886) and of Peterborough Cathedral (1892). The shafts supporting the pulpit in the nave of Worcester Cathedral are composed of Anglesey Serpentine.
