Description: Label name: Appin. Alternative name: Ballachulish. Specimen description: Mottled white and grey. Appin/ Ballachulish Limestone, similar to sample S34481. Text from: Watson, J. British and foreign marbles and other ornamental stones. Cambridge : University Press, 1916. 59 BALLACHULISH. Gortancoma Quarries, Ballachulish, Argyllshire. About two miles east of Ballachulish, a small town on the south shore of Loch Leven, there are deposits of crystalline limestone which overlie the Pre-Cambrian beds that furnish the well-known Ballachulish slates.
These deposits yield a marble which, as the specimen from Gortancoma Quarries skews, is attractive in appearance, and takes a good polish. It is a white marble with occasional dark grey mottled patches, and delicate light pink veinings traverse the mass. Notwithstanding that there is now railway communication with Ballachulish, and transport by water from that s town is also available, these quarries are seldom in full operation, and are at present idle. The material, however, is there in abundance and awaits, development. The large slab in the collection seems to compare favourably in appearance with some of the varieties of the famous Sicilian Marbles of Italy, and the Vermont Marbles of America. It is said that varieties are also available possessing a bright pink ground with grey markings.
