Caption: Marble specimen. Rouge Royal, Belgium. Vodelee Quarries, Namur, Belgium.
Description: Label name: Rouge Royal, Belgium. Specimen description: Red-brown with lighter indestinct fragments (shells). Text from: Watson, J. British and foreign marbles and other ornamental stones. Cambridge : University Press, 1916. 158 ROUGE ROYAL. Vodelee Quarries, Namur. This is another example of the Red Marbles of Belgium. It is found close to the bed which yields the Rouge Griotte just described, but the colour. is not so brilliant, neither are the veinings so clearly defined in this variety. Indistinct outlines of shells and other fossils can be seen. Examples of this marble will be found in St John's College Chapel, Cambridge. It was used in 1869 for the altar slab, and the super-altar, added some years later, is also made of it. The Cambridge student may be interested to learn how the Rouge Royal of Belgium came to be used in the Chapel; this is explained on page 211. Watson J. British and foreign marbles. 1916.
