Caption: Marble specimen. Napoleon. Marble Quarries, Hydrequent, Pas de Calais.
Description: Label name: Napoleon. Specimen description: Fawn/cream with grey/clear veins. Text from: Watson, J. British and foreign marbles and other ornamental stones. Cambridge : University Press, 1916. 202 NAPOLEON. Marble Quarries, Hydrequent, Pas de Calais. In the neighbourhood of Boulogne there is a group of quarries yielding a variegated marble which is in request for decorative purposes in France, and is also exported freely to England, Germany, and Belgium. The specimen from the Hydrequent Quarries is a good example. It will be seen that the colour is delicate fawn, with pink and brown veins running through the mass. This marble, which is known commercially as Napoleon, can be quarried in large blocks; and it is especially useful for forming pillars, where size and strength are required. An example may be seen in the corridor of the Holborn Restaurant, London (1894). It was employed for the Opus Sectile pavements in the chancels of the Cathedrals of Bristol (1895), Truro (1886), and Peterborough (1892).
