Caption: Marble specimen. Lumachelle. Marble Quarries, near Lourdes, Hautes-Pyrenees.
Description: Label name: Lumachelle. Alternative name: Lumachelle de Lourdes. Specimen description: Dark martix crowded with fossils; shows irredescence. Text from: Watson, J. British and foreign marbles and other ornamental stones. Cambridge : University Press, 1916. 262 LUMACHELLE DE LOURDES. Marble Quarries, near Lourdes, Hautes-Pyrenees. Percy Collection. This is an example of Fossil Marble which is found and quarried in the Department of Hautes-Pyrenees, and it will be seen from the specimen that it differs widely, both in texture and colour, from the Fossil Marbles of Basses-Pyrenees. The matrix of this rock is of a reddish fawn colour, and it is crowded with fossils. This marble takes its name from the town near where the quarries are situated. They are close to the Old Bridge (Pont Vieux) which spans the Gave, a little to the west of Lourdes.
