Caption: Marble specimen. Vert D'eau, France. Estour Quarries, Haute-Garonne.
Description: Label name: Vert D'eau, France. Alternative name: Vert D'estour. Specimen description: White with cloudy green veins. Text from: Watson, J. British and foreign marbles and other ornamental stones. Cambridge : University Press, 1916. 239 VERT D'ESTOUR. Estour Quarries, Haute-Garonne. This marble, as the large slab indicates, is a good example of the amygdaloidal group of Pyrenean rocks. The white ground-mass is almost entirely covered with light green amygdaloidal markings. The quarry yielding this marble is situated close to the village of Estour, in a valley bearing the same name, in the Department of Haute-Garonne. The quarry has riot been long in operation, but since the marble has been introduced for industrial purposes, it has become popular, especially for decorating furniture. It is also sometimes employed for panels, and has been used for that purpose in the offices of the Alliance Assurance Co., London (1903). A large table slab of it may be seen in the business premises of the Empire Meat Co., Petty Cury, Cambridge (1912). This marble can be obtained in large blocks and is sometimes known as Vert d'Eau.
