Description: | Youkil, Hilliclay, 4.0 km. south-east of Thurso. Caithness. Flagstone quarry. Shows method of working the flagstones and stowage of refuse. Two-wheeled carts drawn by ponies are used for transporting stone. On the left is a cartway built up with waste rubble. Waste is also used as retaining walls to hold back spoil. Beyond the quarry, flags placed vertically are used to form fences. The rock is Devonian (Old Red Sandstone) Caithness Flagstones. |
