Caption: Marble specimen. Griotti, Italy. Marble Quarries, Carcassonne, Aude.
Description: Label name: Griotti, Italy. Alternative name: Griotte D'Italie. Specimen description: Dark red/brown containing fossil fragments and white/clear veins. Text from: Watson, J. British and foreign marbles and other ornamental stones. Cambridge : University Press, 1916. 179 GRIOTTE D'ITALIE. Marble Quarries, Carcassonne, Aude. The name by which this marble is known is rather misleading, as the quarries which furnish it are situated in France. As the specimen shows, this marble is amygdaloidal in character. It has a dark brown, nearly black, ground, with rich cherry-coloured amygdaloidal patches which are evenly distributed through the mass. There are also spots, or eyes, of pearly white calcite, which add much to its attractive appearance. When these white spots occur in abundance, the variety is known as Oeil de Perdrix (Partridge-eye). There is another variety which lacks these white markings, and which is known as Fleuri. This marble must not be mistaken for the Griotte de Cannes, a marble which is quarried close to the small town of Cannes, also in the Department of Aude. It somewhat resembles the Griotte d' Italie, as it is amygdaloidal in character, and of a red colour, although the tint is not so rich, and it is without the white spots. Griotte d'Italie Marble may be seen in the Opus Alexandrinum pavement of Bristol Cathedral (1895), and in the Opus Sectile floors of the chancel of Peterborough Cathedral (1892).
