| Description: | Holborn Head Quarry, 4.0 km. north-east of Thurso. Caithness. Flagstone quarry showing working face and workmen. The workmen are removing the 'tirring' (superficial deposits and inferior flagstones) from the marketable rock. Flagstones and waste are removed on carts or railway to the cutting sheds. Flagstones are thinly-bedded fine sandstones that split easily into flat, parallel-sided paving stones or flags. The Caithness Flagstones were laid down in freshwater lakes during the Devonian (Old Red Sandstone) period. |
